Lasers Persuasive Essay There are many different types of eating disorders in our world today and many suffer from them. Young women, and the reason is unknown, are the main targets (Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, 147). I believe young women are more apt because of the ideal media, newspapers, magazines, etc. Thats how they feel they need to live up to, and also they are more emotional and are in that stage of life where things like this matter a lot. There are two very common eating disorders, anorexia and bulimia. Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that is characterized by a person with a body weight less than 85% of what is considered normal weight. Anorexics have a fear of being fat (Sonder, ). Anorexics limit their food intake, which is the same thing as starvation. A person who is anorexic continues to diet even when they are bone thin. They are never satisfied with their appearance. They engage in excessive exercising and long depressions, these are just some of the danger signals that anorexics sh ow. This self-starving behavior can lead to sever emancipation or even death. Anorexics see normal fat (folds of flesh) on the body as fat that needs to be eliminated. They often find sleeping and resting a discomfort because they have lost their normal body fat. Victims of this serious disorder tend to further from family and friends. They want to be isolated. There are many dangers from starving yourself. The body tends to slow down or even stop certain body processes, your blood pressure may fall, breathing rate may drop, and menstruation also stops. They thyroid gland disappears, and this is the gland that regulates your growth. Your nails and hair become brittle, you skin is dry, and you suffer form light headiness, constipation, and swelling of the joints. When fat is reduced, the body temperature begins to fall, and soft hair forms on the body for warmth. Your body chemicals may also be so imbalanced, heart failure may occur. People who suffer from bulimia nervosa also want to be thin, but they do it in a different fashion called binging and purging (Sonder, ). Binging is when a person will eat a bunch of food, exceeding normal calorie intake. Purging is the way they get rid of it. This way you are still able to eat and then still be thin, but this is very dangerous and can often be deadly. You can tell a person is suffering from bulimia if they have a dramatic loss of weight in a short period of time. The normal calorie intake for normal eaters is 2,000 to 3,000 calories in one day. The average bulimic will usually average 3,400 calories in 1 1/4 hours (Hot, Rinehart, and Winston, 147). For bingers to loose this the purge by either using laxatives, diuretics, enemas, or even just gagging themselves with their fingers. This will also upset the bodys balance of chemicals, which may cause fatigue, seizures, irregular heartbeats and thinner bones. If purging continues to persist, this may damage the stomach or esophagus, the gums will begin to recede, and it will erode your tooth enamel. Some effects also show skin rashes, broken blood vessels in the face, and irregular menstrual cycles (Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, 147). With most eating disorders females are more affected than men (Rosemary, ). Historian John Brumberg says 90 to 95% of anorexics are women. One in two hundred females between 12 and 18 years of age has had anorexia. It used to be upper middle class white teenage and young women who suffered, but now men , boys, older adults, and people of others races may suffer. According to the FDA, 5 to 10% of bulimics and anorexics are men (Sonder, ). Anorexics and bulimics are often known to be perfectionists, and when they dont perfect in something they punish themselves with starvation, or binging and purging (www.somethingfishy.org). People with eating disorders often have mood swings, lack of motivation, hopelessness, feelings of anxiety or panic attacks, claustrophobia in crowded places, and isolation and loneliness. All of these symptoms are suicidal. They may have frequent headaches, this is due to low blood pressure and decreased oxygen supply to the brain (www.somethingfishy.org). Technology has evolved from ideals once seen as unbelievable to common everyday instruments. Computers that used to occupy an entire room are now the size of notebooks. The human race has always pushed for technological advances working at the most efficient level, perhaps, the molecular level. The developments and progress in artificial intelligence and molecular technology have spawned a new form of technology; Nanotechnology. Nanotechnology could give the human race eternal life, or it could cause total annihilation. The idea of nanotech was conceived by a man named K. Eric Drexler (Stix 94), which he defines as "Technology based on the manipulation of individual atoms and molecules to build structures to complex atomic specifications (Drexler, "Engines" 288)." The technology which Drexler speaks of will be undoubtedly small, in fact, nano- structures will only measure 100 nanometers, or a billionth of a meter (Stix 94). Being as small as they are, nanostructures require fine particles that can only be seen with the STM, or Scanning Tunneling Microscope (Dowie 4). Moreover the STM allows the scientists to not only see things at the molecular level, but it can pick up and move atoms as well (Port 128). Unfortunately the one device that is giving nanoscientists something to work with is also one of the many obstacles restricting the development of nanotech. The STM has been regarded as too big to ever produce nanotech structures (Port 128). Other scientists have stated that the manipulation of atoms, which nanotech relies on, ignores atomic reality. Atoms simply don't fit together in ways which nanotech intends to use them (Garfinkel 105). The problems plaguing the progress of nanotech has raised many questions among the scientific community concerning it's validity. The moving of atoms, the gathering of information, the restrictions of the STM, all restrict nanotech progress. And until these questions are answered, nanotech is regarded as silly (Stix 98). But the nanotech optimists are still out there. They contend that the progress made by a team at IBM who was able to write letters and draw pictures atom by atom actually began the birth of nanotech (Darling 49). These same people answer the scientific questions by replying that a breakthrough is not needed, rather the science gained must be applied (DuCharme 33). In fact, Drexler argues that the machines exist, trends are simply working on building better ones ("Unbounding" 24). Drexler continues by stating that the machines he spoke about in "Engines of Creation" published in 1986 should be developed early in the 21st century ("Unbounding" 116). However many scientists still argue that because nanotech has produced absolutely nothing physical, it should be regarded as science fiction (Garfinkel 111). Secondly, nano-doubters rely on scientific fact to condemn nanotech. For example it is argued that we are very far away from ever seeing nanotech due to the fact that when atoms get warm they have a tendency to bounce around. As a result the bouncing atoms collide with other materials and mess up the entire structure (Davidson A1). Taken in hand with the movement of electron charges, many regard nanotech as impossible (Garfinkel 106). But this is not the entirety of the obstacles confining nanotech development. One major set-back is the fact that the nanostructures are too small to reflect light in a visible way, making them practically invisible (Garfinkel 104). Nevertheless, Nanotech engineers remain hopeful and argue that; "With adequate funding, researchers will soon be able to custom build simple molecules that can store and process information and manipulate or fabricate other molecules, including more of themselves. This may occur before the turn of the century."(Roland 30) There are other developments also, that are pushing nanotech in the right direction for as Lipkin pointed out recent developments have lead to possibilities of computers thinking in 3-D (5). Which is a big step towards the processing of information that nanotech requires. Although there are still unanswered questions from some of the scientific community, researchers believe that they are moving forward and will one day be able to produce nanomachines. I remember the moving guys taking everything out of our home and loading it into a big truck parked out front while my mom was frantically packing up all of our things into boxes. Moving was going to be a big change, but was not so frightening being that I have family that not only lives in California but also in the area we would be moving to. I did not know very much at such a young age so choosing an elementary school was not a difficult task for my parents. On the first day of school my brother, Colby, and I walked through the gates eager to meet new friends and together we made our way out to the playground before school started. Colby is my older brother. We are seventeen months apart and have always been very close. At this point, we were too young to realize what we would be getting ourselves into and our parents had raised us to treat everybody with equal respect and kindness. With that being said, making friends was very easy for us and we enjoyed our elementary school days. Looking back at either old yearbooks of my classmates or just what I am able to recall from memory, my elementary school was primarily white with very little diversity. I did, however, have one friend that was african american, his name was Donovan, and I believe he was the only african american in my entire school. Regardless of his race, my attitude and friendship with him was no different than any other one of my friends. I was raised to believe that we are all equal beings, no one person is above another. What I was not aware of at such a young age, was the differences in lifestyles that everyone lived. Whether it be in a home, apartment, condo, or even being homeless. In addition to home lifes, there are different religious beliefs, different foods that we all eat, different holidays that we celebrate and much more. When I turned 11 years old, my life began to change drastically. My parents had decided to get divorced. My mom, Erin, had been a stay at home mom for many years of the relationship with no additional education past high school. Being said, finding work for my mom was difficult with no set skill set, just a great work ethic and the drive to do better. For more support and assistance with Colby, my sister Alivia, and I, my mom decided it would be best for us to move back to the great state of California where all of our immediate family lives. Upon arrival, my mom had about three hundred dollars and the truck we moved our things with. With the great family I have, my aunt and uncle invited us to stay with them until we were able to get on our feet. Coming from my dad making over one hundred and fifty thousand a year living in a nice home with two parents, this was going to be a big change. We lived with my family for about a year with all four of us in one bedroom. The room was only so big so Colby and I shared a twin bed and My mom and Alivia shared a twin bed. We had 1 small dresser to put our clothes in and no closet in the room. We shopped at the swapmeet for clothes when we had the money and ate chicken and rice burritos for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for months. My mom had gotten a job at an assisted living facility working graveyard shifts 6 days out of the week where she was a caregiver for residents with alzheimers and dementia. I remember she came home one morning and told us the story about all of her coworkers at night primarily speaking spanish. She had previously asked my aunt how to say â€Å"I wipe many shitty asses†. My aunt told her to go back to her friends and tell them â€Å" Limpio muchos culos de mierda†. Aside from that, this is where I began to realize that there was much more to living that I had become accustomed to. Once the school year started, I began to attend middle school for the first time in a new state with no friend, and coming from a primarily white school going into a school that white had seemed more like a minority was a shock for me. I began to feel like an outcast and just minded my own business. I would walk the mile in P.E. by myself, I sat in the back of the classroom, and I ate my lunches alone. After a few days, people would come up to me and introduce themselves and I slowly began to make new friends. Before this time I had primarily had white friends that lived very similar to me and ate the same foods and did similar activities as me. The very first friend I made was mexican. His name is Antonio Loera and we are still friends to this day. His family is very big. His mom has ninety nine first cousins and his dad a very similar number. When he would invite me to family occasions I would be overwhelmed by the amounts of family in attendance. Everyone was always so nice and welcoming. Nobody came empty handed and everyone always made sure that you had enough and a little extra to eat. Over the years we learned more about each other, Antonios dad was originally from Mexico. After many years of hardship he was able to become a citizen of the United States. It was different for me to see a family that had been through so much change in their present day life and still work as hard as they did. Antonio’s family was very successful with his mom being an interpreter for the courts and his dad the owner of a mexican food restaurant. Being so young, it was very eye opening for me to be able see what his family had accomplished. From his mother not have graduating high school as a minority being able to go back to school and become qualified for a job within the court system, to his dad picking up his entire life and moving to a separate country where negativity is all around and people root against you. I am grateful to be able to see first hand the opportunities that are within our communities and the great United States. I have learned alot about different lifestyles and the difficult struggles that other families have been through. My eye opening experiences coming from a predominantly white community with a middle class family and two parents, to living in unfortunate living conditions have been one for the better with the great role models in my life.
